Description:

Even rarer are camouflage items intended explicitly for the U.S.M.C.'s short lived experimental "Paramarine" airborne forces, which existed only for part of World War II. This jacket is patterned after the Army's M42 jump jacket, and is pictured on pages 488-489 of "Heroes in Our Midst" by Angolia, Powers and Petersen as being the only known example in existence; no photos have been found of the jacket in use, and it is believed to have been a limited production prototype item. The jacket is constructed from double sided "jungle/beach" pattern herringbone twill cloth and fitted with a set of brass "U.S. MARINE CORPS" buttons on the front and on the cuffs, with black plastic buttons and snaps for the pockets and the rear adjustment straps. Originally fitted with two large breast pockets, the jacket is equipped with four smaller external pockets, with the breast pockets stitched through the originals; the original large pockets are very similar in configuration to those found on the Paramarine Smock also listed in this auction. No identifying marks are present.

Rating Definition:

Very good overall, with mild oxidization and verdigris around the brass buttons, a button absent from the right breast pocket and light wear and handling marks overall. Out of an already very narrow range of extant USMC camouflage gear, this jacket stands out as being especially rare, being possibly the only one of its kind in the world.
