Description:

Both pistols are marked "GOTLIB STEEGER" in panels on top of the barrel and have gold filled hallmarks and fluer-de-lis at the breech. Gotlib Steeger was active in the first half of the 18th century in Carlsbad, Bohemia, then part of the Holy Roman Empire. The locks are engraved with men in a running gun battle on horseback, and the side plates have two men charging in from the right with their backs to a castle and another charges from the right with his back towards two bound women and stands of arms. The men advancing from the castle likely represent the Holy Roman Empire while the other man with his enslaved women clearly represents their enemy (possibly the French or Spanish). Other components have various exotic images including ape like faces. They have been converted in the Germanic style with a safety replacing the frizzen and the frizzen spring retained to provide tension.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The brass has mostly aged patina but some original gilding remains. The barrel and lock have been cleaned and have gray patina, light pitting, and some patches of gold on the lock near the bolster. The stock is very good with crisp carving, a few small chips, and a subtle repair at the horn forend cap. Mechanically fine.
