This is an attractive example of a professionally custom embellished Winchester 1886 lever action rifle chambered in the desirable 45-70 WCF cartridge that was manufactured in 1887. The octagon barrel, loading lever, bolt, hammer and buttplate have been nicely blued with a deep blue/black type finish, and the complete receiver and forend cap have a beautiful color casehardened type finish. The entire receiver and lower tang have been beautifully engraved in a deep relief scroll engraving with a geometric border pattern combined with several game scenes. The left side depicts a large grizzly bear hunting scene, and on the right side it shows a cowboy riding a bucking bronco, typical of what was seen in a Wild West show. The underside of the receiver is also engraved with a large grizzly bear head. The buttplate has also been fully engraved with the center section depicting the late pattern Winchester Repeating Arms "Pony Express Rider" logo. It is fitted with an extra fancy walnut buttstock and forend with the wrist and both sides of the forend beautifully carved in a complementary vine and scroll pattern. The barrel has no factory markings, and the rear section has been beautifully engraved in a complimentary scroll pattern. The left side is engraved "45-70" in front of the receiver. It has a ramp type front sight base with a brass tipped bead front sight with a "MSA Co." folding tang rear sight. Presumably the upper tang is marked "MODEL 1886", and the lower tang is marked: "PAT. OCT. 14 1884/JAN. 20 1885" behind the trigger and the serial numbers "10601" on the end.
Very fine as elaborately embellished with 99% of its current professionally restored/embellished blue and color casehardened finishes. The stock and forend are also in excellent condition with 99% of their hand rubbed varnish finish. Mechanically excellent. A beautiful looking Deluxe Winchester Model 1886 lever action rifle.
