Description:

Manufactured in 1898. The included Cody Firearms Museum letter describes Model 1894, serial number 115099 as: "Rifle, 30 caliber, Barrel Shape: 1/2 Octagon, Plain trigger, Plain wood stock with pistol grip" and "1/2 magazine". The letter states that this rifle was shipped from Winchester on June 11, 1901. This rifle has a special order, 26-inch, half-round/half-octagon barrel and half-magazine. The barrel has a Lyman Express front sight with colored bead and an Express rear sight with three leaves with platinum sight lines and "50", "1" and "2" markings. The upper receiver tang is factory drilled and tapped. The forearm and pistol grip stock are straight grain American walnut with a varnish finish. The stock has a black, hard rubber pistol grip cap embossed "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO." and a crescent buttplate. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped: "MANUFACTURED BY THE /WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A." in two lines ahead of the rear sight. "NICKEL STEEL BARREL/ESPECIALLY FOR SMOKELESS POWDER" is roll-stamped in two lines on the left side of the barrel behind the rear sight. The caliber designation "30 W.C.F." is roll-stamped on the top barrel flat just ahead of the receiver. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "MODEL 1894/-WINCHESTER-/PAT. AUG. 21.1894" in three lines. The serial number, "115099", is roll-stamped across the bottom of the receiver. The barrel, forearm cap, receiver and bolt have the Winchester charcoal blue finish. The extractor and loading gate are nitre blue. The hammer, lever and crescent buttplate are color case-hardened.

Rating Definition:

Excellent plus. 98% plus of the original blue finish is present on the barrel. The markings are crisp. The top and sides of the rear sight have some minor finish loss. There are some minor scuff marks on the sides of the forearm cap, but at least 90% of the blue remains. The bolt and receiver retain 97% plus of the original blue finish with traces of wear on the receiver edges. The extractor and loading gate have nearly all of the fire blue finish. The hammer and lever retain nearly all of the vivid case colors. The case colors on the buttplate are more muted but remain at least 95%. The stock and forearm are both in excellent condition with minimal handling or storage marks and all of the original finish. This is an excellent example of a Winchester Model 1894 Sporting Rifle with rarely encountered combination of special order half-round/half-octagon barrel, express front and rear sights, half magazine and pistol grip stock.
