Rare W. Kidder Cased Civil War Era Starr Arms Model 1858 Navy Double Action Percussion Revolver

Starr Arms Company manufactured an estimated total of 58,000 revolvers in the late 1850s and 1860s. Only 3,000 of those were the Navy Model, and all but 750 of those are believed to have been purchased by the U.S. government. Thus, this is a very rare example made all the more rare by the fact that it comes in a rare W. Kidder marked case with floral design velvet lined interior fitted to the gun and the included bullet mold, Eley Bros. cap tin, Dixon & Sons nickel powder flask and oiler, and package of Colt combustible cartridges "EXPRESSLY FOR COL. COLT'S PATENT/NEW MODEL/REVOLVING/POLICE PISTOL." Starr revolvers were the third most widely used during the Civil War, and the most widely used double action revolvers of the conflict. The barrel has the standard dovetailed front sight, and the hammer has a notch for a rear sight. The left side of the frame has the patent marking, and the right side has the address. Matching serial numbers are located on the barrel, frame, cylinder, hammer slot, hammer, grip straps, and grip.

ConditionFine. The frame retains 60% of the original blue finish while the barrel and cylinder have mostly gray and brown patina. The loading lever and hammer retain patches of original case colors. There are patches of mild oxidation and pitting scattered throughout and various minor marks and scratches. The grip is fine and has some scrapes, several dents, and mild handling wear. The exterior of the fine case is revarnished and has scattered dings, some minor staining on the fine original lining, and crisp Kidder markings. The accessories are all fine. The cap tin has crude tape repairs.
