Documented Winchester Model 1894 Trapper's Lever Action Carbine with Factory and ATF Exemption Letter

The Cody letter describes this carbine as: "Carbine, 30 caliber," and "Barrel Length: 15 inches". The letter states this carbine was shipped from Winchester on October 9, 1906. The carbine has a 15-inch round barrel with full-length magazine. The barrel has the second style barrel band and block mounted brass blade front sight. The rear sight is the rare Winchester Express sight with three folding leaves marked "50", "1" and "2" and platinum sight lines. The upper tang is factory drilled and tapped for a tang sight. A staple mounted saddle ring is located on the left side of the receiver. The stock has a carbine style buttplate. The carbine has a blue finish with niter blue loading gate and color casehardened hammer, trigger, and lever. The stock and forearm are straight grain walnut with a low-luster oil finish. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO./NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A. PATENTED AUGUST 21. 1894." in front of the lower barrel band. The caliber designation "30 W.C.F." is roll-stamped on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver. "NICKEL STEEL BARREL/ESPECIALLY FOR SMOKELESS POWDER" is roll-stamped on the left side of the barrel in two lines below the rear sight. Oval Winchester "W/P" proofmarks are stamped on the top of the barrel in front of the rear sight and on the top of the receiver. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped "MODEl 1894/-WINCHESTER-/TRADE MARK" in three lines. The serial number "318257" is roll-stamped across the bottom of the receiver. The Winchester Model 1894 Carbines with 18", 16", 15" or 14" barrels are rare. Most of these special short barrel carbines were manufactured for export and surviving examples are rarely encountered. This carbine is accompanied by a 1983 BATF letter that states this Winchester Model 1894 carbine with 15-inch barrel has been removed from the purview of the National Firearms Act.

ConditionExcellent. 98% of the original blue finish is present on the barrel, magazine and barrel bands. The barrel markings are very sharp. The sides and top of the receiver and upper tang show handling wear but retain 95% of the original blue finish. The buttplate has 85% of the dull blue finish with wear on the heel and toe. The hammer, trigger and lever retain 90% of the vivid case colors. The stock and forearm are both in excellent condition with nearly all of the low-luster oil finish. Wear is limited to a few scattered and very minor handling and storage marks. Model 1894 Trapper's carbines are rare in any condition. These carbines invariably show wear that reflects years of hard use in a rugged environment. This carbine remains in excellent condition and shows little indication of use. It is almost certainly one of the finest Model 1894 Trapper's carbines extant.
