Description:

The gun is a non-period composite most likely done some time ago. This pistol was likely part of a pair and would have been particularly suited to a naval officer or a dragoon. The latter's name actually comes from their use of these "dragon" pistols. The flared muzzles made reloading much easier on horseback or on the rolling seas, and the primarily brass fittings were more resistant to corrosion. It is marked with "TWIGG" near the center of the lock, "LONDON- - -" on top of the barrel at the breech, and Birmingham proof and view marks on the upper left flat flanking an unclear hallmark (indicating manufacture in 1813 or later). The barrel is fitted with a folding "snap" bayonet that is secured by a sliding catch on the upper tang when folded and spring forward to latch on the stud on the muzzle when released. The lock also has light engraving, a roller on the frizzen spring, and a sliding half-cock safety. The stock has a checkered bag shaped wrist. The caliber is estimated above. The muzzles flare out to just under 1 inch.

Rating Definition:

Fine overall with gray patina and slight oxidation on the iron and an attractive aged patina on the brass. The upper tang is cracked, and the bayonet stud on the muzzle is replaced. The stock, also fine, has fairly crisp checkering, a minor chip on the forend tip on the right, and several small dents and scratches. Mechanically functions fine, including the snap bayonet, other than the broken safety (detached).
