Magnificent Recreation of Gustave Young's Exhibition Engraved, Gold Inlaid and Carved Colt Model 1862 Navy Percussion Revolver

Originally manufactured in the 1860s, this revolver was beautifully embellished in the 20th century to resemble a Gustave Young exhibition grade display piece. Gustave Young exhibition grade revolvers similar to the design motif found on this revolver are presented in R.L. Wilson's "The Colt Engraving Book, Vol. I" in Chapter 4. This revolver features semi-relief engraved scrollwork on the barrel lug, cylinder, loading lever, frame, hammer and grip straps as well as raised scrollwork in gold on the barrel and rebated section of the cylinder. Full coverage scrollwork replaces the stagecoach holdup scene. Gold inlaid animals (dogs, ducks and foxes) are featured on the barrel lug, frame and recoil shields. The frame marking "COLTS/PATENT" is inlaid in gold and inside a raised ornate gold panel. The one-line New York barrel address and "COLTS PATENT" on the cylinder are also in gold. There are gold inlaid line borders around the scrollwork. Double gold inlaid bands and scrollwork are at the muzzle. The grip straps and loading lever latch are plated in gold, the loading lever, hammer and frame are casehardened, the loading lever catch, trigger and barrel wedge are niter blue, and the cylinder and barrel are blue. The highly figured one-piece grip features fine checkering accented with a relief carved leaf at the top. Matching numbers are found on the barrel, frame, trigger guard and arbor pin. The wedge and loading lever are un-numbered.

ConditionVery fine as professionally custom embellished. The barrel and cylinder have faded to a brown. Nearly all of the gold plating, niter blue and case colors remain. The grip has crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. A beautiful work of art that mimics the craftsmanship of one of Colt's greatest master engravers, Gustave Young.
