Description:

This is a fine example of a WWI Winchester Model 1918 Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR) manufactured in 1918. These rifles were originally developed and issued to the American Expeditionary Force (AEF) in France during WWI. It proved to be a highly effective combat assault rifle and light machine gun, that was reissued in WWII and even into Korea and Vietnam. They were extremely reliable and highly accurate with the sole drawback being their 20 round magazine. This example has been arsenal refurbished as the top of the receiver is stamped with "AA" indicating rebuild by Augusta Arsenal for WWII/Korea and then eventually sold by the government as a Foreign Military Sale as it is listed as a "Sales Sample Only". It has the later BAR adjustable rear sight, with a wood forend and a later WWII 1918A2 pattern fiberglass buttstock with the folding shoulder support buttplate, and the late pattern magazine guards. The receiver is marked: "BROWNING AUTOMATIC RIFLE/- U.S. CAL. .30. MODEL 1918 (overstamped A2)-/- MAN'F'D. BY WINCHESTER -/118835/- PATENT APPLIED FOR - ". It is fitted with a WWII New England Firearms replacement barrel marked "NE-7/Ordnance Shell and Flame proof/6-43" with a WWII flash-hider and bipod. The top of the receiver is stamped with a small Eagle Head proof and the breech end of the barrel is stamped with a small Ordnance Bomb proof mark. It comes with one 20 round box magazine and a bipod. The underside edge of the magazine well is stamped with "LAW ENFORCEMENT, ATHENS GA.".

Rating Definition:

Very good overall with 90% with an arsenal type refurbished parkerized finish, with a slight off color on the trigger housing. The wood forend and fiberglass buttstock are both in good condition showing wear overall from field use. NOTE: This weapon is a restricted, National Firearms Act (NFA) Class 3, Fully Automatic Weapon, that is registered with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE) under the provisions of 18 U.S.C. Chapter 44 and 27 CFR part 478. This weapon is currently registered as being "LIMITED TO USE AS A SALES SAMPLE (Pre-86)" and as such can only be purchased by an FFL, with a Class 2 or Class 3 SOT License.
