This a fine early production Winchester Model 1866 rifle was manufactured in 1869. The top barrel flat is marked with the first style legend "HENRY'S PATENT-OCT. 16. 1860/KINGS-PATENT-MARCH 29, 1866" ahead of the rear sight. It is fitted with dovetailed blade front sight, folding ladder rear sight graduated to 900 yards, Vernier tang sight, special order sling swivels on the forearm cap and stock and rare original leather sling. The serial number is stamped on the lower tang just behind the trigger. The matching assembly number "945" is stamped on the stock inlet and brass trapdoor buttplate. The four piece cleaning rod is included.
Fine. The rifle retains 25% of original blue finish with the balance a smooth dark patina overall. There is some minor to moderate pitting. The very fine untouched original brass has an attractive mottled aged patina. The wood is also fine with a number of minor to moderate dings and scratches. Mechanically functions. The hammer does not hold at the half cock position. An absolutely original and highly desirable Winchester Model 1866!
