An early variation with the steel slide and alloy frame found in the first group of guns shipped which fall into the 1001-2600 serial number range. The consignor reports that this pistol "was specially engraved at the factory by Master Engraver Russell J. Smith for long time employee C.B. McGowan." McGowan's family crest is engraved on top of the slide just behind the front sight. The back strap features an engraved eagle over "1956" inside a banner and McGowan's initials ("CBM"). An oak leaf pattern, Russ Smith's signature style, is engraved on the slide, frame, trigger guard and back strap. The left side of the slide also has an engraved stag in a forest scene. The grips feature contrasting caps and an oak leaf carving that matches the engraving. The slide and frame have a high polish nickel finish and most of the small parts have polished blue finish. Comes with a foam lined wooden case and two magazines.

Excellent plus overall. The pistol retains over 99% original high polished nickel and blue finishes and shows a few very minor scratches on the grips. Mechanically excellent. The case is excellent showing some scattered minor handling/storage marks. This special factory engraved Model 39 for a S&W employee will make for a perfect addition to a S&W pistol collection.
