The Model 1840 was the last U.S. Martial Flintlock musket and the vast majority of them were converted to percussion. Many were also rifled. This example remains in original smoothbore, flintlock configuration and is marked "D. NIPPES/US" at the center of the lock ("ES" double stamped), "MILL/CREEK/PA/1844" at the tail of the lock, "U.S./NWP/P" on top at the breech, "P" on the left flat, "1844" on the barrel tang, and "U.S." on the buttplate tang. The left stock flat has "NWP" and "WAT" cartouches. The bayonet is marked "US" near the base of the blade.
