Documented U.S. Springfield Armory Model 1899 "School Gun" Krag Bolt Action Carbine

This rifle is featured in the June 2004 Man at Arms article "The U.S. Krag Carbine" and in "U.S. Military Bolt Action Rifles" on pages 153, 164, and 165 by Bruce Canfield. It has standard markings and features a 2,300 yard rear sight, a scrip "CV" cartouche on the left, a "1" on top of the comb, an oiler in the butt, and a leather sling. Canfield identifies this as a Rock Island Arsenal altered "school rifle" for use by cadets. Girard College in Philadelphia requested "a light, or short, rifle" for their cadets in 1900. They finally received the first 350 in November 1906. The model was also issued to the Philippine Constabulary. 8,000 "M1899 carbine altered for knife bayonet" were manufactured in 1906-1914 at the Manila Ordnance Depot, Springfield Armory, and Rock Island Arsenal. The Krags were by then surplus thanks to the adoption of the Model 1903 Springfield, and fitting a carbine with a rifle stock and altering the barrel to fit a knife bayonet made them more suitable for use by the short-statured Filipinos and cadets alike. Provenance: Bruce Canfield collection.

ConditionVery good overall with traces of original finish mixed with brown patina, some light oxidation, and scattered minor marks. The wood has some dents and scratches throughout and a splice to the left of the buttplate tang. Mechanically excellent.
