This is a scarce example of one of the 1,000 experimental Model 1886 carbines manufactured by Springfield Armory for cavalry troop trials. They are also known as the "Experimental Model 1882 Third Type or Fourth Type" and were officially referred to as the "24 Inch Barrel Carbine." It has a standard blade front sight, a single barrel band with a sling ring that is bent so that it lays close to the stock, a correct "XC" marked Buffington rear sight, standard lock markings, Model 1873 markings on the breechblock, saddle ring and bar, traces of a cartouche, and a sling swivel on the butt. Provenance: Bruce Canfield collection.

Rating Definition:

Very good with mostly mottled brown patina, traces of original case colors, 70% original blue finish on the trigger guard, some minor oxidation, and general marks. The refinished stock is very good and has small nicks and scratches throughout and a few dents. Mechanically fine. These are among the rarest of the Springfield trapdoor firearms.
