This is a much sought after example of an etched panel Colt Frontier Six Shooter SAA revolver as manufactured in 1883. The accompanying factory letter lists this revolver with a 4 3/4 inch barrel in .44-40 caliber and blue finish when it was shipped to C.J. Chapin Arms Co. of St. Louis on August 21, 1885, along with one other gun. The barrel is stamped with the two-line address on top and features the etched panel "COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER" on the left side. This etched barrel panel marking was officially replaced by the Colt factory in the early 120,000 serial number range with the much easier to produce and larger roll-stamping. The left side of the frame has the three-line, three-patent date marking, and the left side of the trigger guard is marked "44 CF." Matching serial numbers are found on the frame, trigger guard, back strap, barrel (1345) and cylinder (1345).

Very good. Traces of original blue finish (heavier amounts on the ejector rod housing) and case colors remain in the protected areas, otherwise the revolver has a mottled gray patina. The cylinder has been refinished and the notch leads and serial number are faint. The replacement grips are good with the bottoms having been modified and showing wear on the high edges and in the checkering and a finger nail-sized gouge. Mechanically excellent.
