Description:

The Northwest Trade Gun is arguably the most widely used gun in American history. They were in use during the French & Indian War, American Revolution, nearly every Indian War of the 19th century, and even remained in use in some areas into the early 20th century. Other than minor changes, the basic firearm that was traded in 1750 and 1890 were the same. This late 19th century trade gun has "MAKERS TO HER MAJESTYS/WAR DEPARTMENT" around the Isaac Hollis & Sons "HIS" monogram. The barrel has a blade front sight, some filed grooves to act as a rear sight banded transition points, and proofs on the left at the breech. The stock has tear drop flats and a series of iron tacks, including an arrow design on the right side of the butt. It also features a traditional "serpent" side plate, large trigger and trigger guard and screw fastened brass buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Good with brown patina, mild oxidation and pitting, aged patina on the brass, and general minor marks and scratches. The stock is fair with cracks and slivers absent, some chipping, and darker tones around the tacks. Mechanically fine. Overall, a solid representative example of a later period trade gun. A Northwest trade gun should be part of every American collection given their role in nearly every significant North American conflict of the 18th and 19th centuries.
