Description:

This is a special order, semi deluxe Winchester Model 1894 Extra Lightweight rifle with rarely encountered pistol grip stock. The accompanying factory letter lists this rifle with extra light 22 inch round barrel in .30 caliber, plain trigger, plain pistol grip stock, Lyman front sight and shotgun buttplate when it was shipped on October 9, 1899. The serial number was applied for on October 19, 1898. The rifle has the Winchester blue finish on the barrel, magazine, forearm cap, receiver, bolt and shotgun buttplate. The loading gate is a fiery niter blue. The hammer, trigger and lever are color casehardened. The forearm and pistol grip stock are select American walnut with a piano finish. The pistol grip has a black hard rubber cap embossed, "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS COMPANY". The 22-inch, lightweight, tapered barrel has a special order Lyman "Winchester Express" front sight with colored bead and special order Winchester Express rear sight with three folding leaves. The leaves have platinum sight lines and are marked "50", "1" and "2". The upper tang is factory drilled and tapped. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped, "MANUFACTURED BY THE/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A-" ahead of the rear sight. The caliber "30 W.C.F." is roll-stamped on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped, "MODEL 1894/-WINCHESTER-/PAT. AUG. 21. 1894" in three lines. The serial number is roll-stamped across the bottom of the receiver.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. This rifle is all original and retains 95% plus of the bright original high polish blue and casehardened finish. There is a small spot of pitting on the underside of the magazine and the magazine has been partially reblued. The refinished portion of the magazine is very hard to detect without careful examination. The balance of the rifle retains at least 95% of the original charcoal blue finish. Nearly all of the bright original nitre blue is present on the buttplate. The loading gate has all of the fire blue finish intact. The hammer, trigger and lever retain 90% plus of the vivid casehardened finish with strong case colors. The select walnut stock and forearm are in excellent condition and have more than 90% of the piano finish intact. The finish wear is mostly confined to the rear portion of the forearm near the receiver. The left side of the stock and forearm have some scattered and very minor handling marks. All of the barrel and receiver markings are crisp. This is an exceptional example of a scarce special order Winchester Model 1894 Extra Lightweight short rifle with pistol grip stock.
