The Penel family of St. Etienne was active from the 17th century into the 19th century. The Penel Brothers are known to have supplied the French Gendarmerie and were active around 1740-1760. They have "PENEL/FRERES" on the right locks and "A ST ETIENNE" on the left locks. The barrels have floral and punch dot designs. The trigger guards and tendril style pommel caps are cast silver and chased with in relief with hunting trophies. The plugs have busts of men likely meant to be from the Ottoman Empire or Indian sub-continent. The ramrod pipes are also silver and are bone tipped.

Fine overall with bright iron, some patches of minor oxidation/pitting, nice aged patina on most of the silver, a small chip on the plug and some wear on the heel, and distinct markings and designs. One pommel spur is cracked. The re-oiled stock has crisp carving, a partially repaired crack along the left side of the forend, small chips at the nose of the left lock, and minor marks and scratches. Mechanically excellent.
