Description:

Cutler and gunmaker John Prosser operated at 9 Charing Cross, London, from 1796 to 1853 and then worked at 37 Charing Cross from 1854 to 1860. The pistol is signed "PROSSER" on each of the advanced locks which have sliding safeties, frizzen rollers, and semi-waterproof pans. The concave barrel rib has a blade front sight and "CHARING CROSS LONDON." Small London proof and view marks are on the left barrel. The breeches have gold bands and gold vent liners. The furniture aside from the barrel mostly has floral engraving. The silver thumb plate is inscribed "WDF" in fancy script. The stock has a narrow, checkered wrist. Somewhat similar pistols by Prosser are known dating to 1803.

Rating Definition:

Good with gray patina and extensive scattered moderate dark pitting, nearly all of the original gold inlay, and general minor marks and scratches. The stock is very good as repaired and has crisp checkering, small dents and scratches, and a splice over the nose of the right lock. Other than the broken left lock safety, it is mechanically fine.
