Description:

They have the Liege oval proof on the left at the breech, "1" on the right flats, "9854" and "A RUBANS" (ribbon steel/Damascus) on the lower right, "GB" behind the wedge lugs, and "AL" and "HF" (latter only on one gun) markings on the bottom, further towards the breech. Matching serial numbers are marked on the face of the upper tang and underside of the locks. "641" is marked on the top of the stocks to the left of the upper tangs (likely a collection number). The blade front sights and fixed notch/ear rear sights are appropriate for dueling on the continent in the mid-19th century as are the single set triggers, finely rifled bores, and hooked trigger guards. The stocks have carving at the front of the Schnabel forend tips and edge of the pommel caps, checkered wrists, and German silver thumb plates, and there is floral and scroll engraving. There are no full maker's marks, but dueling pistols of this style were popular around the mid-19th century in France and Belgium. The pair comes in a brass cornered, highly figured, veneered, burl walnut case with French fitted interior containing the pistols, a mallet, combination nipple wrench/screwdriver, engrave bullet mold with automatic sprue cutter, small "B.A.P." powder flask, brush, cap container, ramrod, and covered compartment in the lower left.

Rating Definition:

Fine with distinct "ribbon" patterns along the barrel as well as gray patina fading original blue finish, 80% plus original case colors on the other components, some minor oxidation, and mild edge wear. The stock is fine with crisp checkering and carving, numerous small scratches and dings, and some tiny chips. Mechanically fine. The accessories and re-lined case are very good with mild storage type wear.

Rating Definition:

Fine with distinct "ribbon" patterns and alternating blued and bright steel along the barrel, strong case colors on the remaining parts, mild oxidation, and light edge wear. The stock is fair with some minor chips, a crack in the left flat, mostly crisp carving and checkering, and general scattered light scratches and dings. Mechanically needs work: the set trigger will not set, and the hammer will sometimes fall prematurely. Overall, this is an attractive set of mid-19th century dueling pistols with accessories and beautifully figured case.
