Rare Panel Scene Engraved Cased Sequential Pair of W.W. Greener Side by Side Shotguns in Extremely Rare 24 Gauge

A) Engraved Greener Box Lock 24 Gauge Shotgun

This is an extraordinary cased pair of W.W. Greener double barrel shotguns in the unique and extremely rare 24 gauge chambering! A single nickel bead sight is installed on the concave rib with a half inch section of scroll engraving at the breech, "W. W. GREENER. 40 PALL MALL. LONDON. S.W WORKS. St. MARY'S SQUARE, BIRMINGHAM" on top of the rib, and the underside showing the Greener elephant trade mark, Birmingham proof marks, "NITRO PROOF", "2 1/2 CHOKE" and "3/4 oz" markings. A gold-inlaid "1" is present on the rear of the rib, on top of the break lever, and on the underside of the forearm. Fine scroll and floral engraving is present on the frame, trigger guard and break lever, with "W.W. GREENER" engraved on each side, a hand engraved serial number on the lower tang, and a gold-inlaid "->/SAFE" marking on the automatic Greener safety. Multiple game scenes are also present on the frame with a pointer indicating 3 ducks in flight on the left, a dog pursuing two ducks on the right, a dead rabbit in a dog's mouth on the trigger guard and three game birds in individual panels on the underside of the frame. It has a checkered straight wrist stock with a horn-tipped splinter forearm, ebony diamond accents behind the stock flats, "TMB" initialed inscription panel on the underside and a serrated buttplate. It includes a brown leather case marked "T.M.B." on the lid with a canvas cover, Two-piece cleaning rod with heads, and a green felt liner. Measurements: weight - 5 pounds 0.6 ounces, chamber - marked "2 1/2", drop at comb - 1 3/4 inches, drop at heel - 2 1/4 inches, length of pull - 15 inches. Right barrel: proved at 24, measuring .582, minimum wall thickness 29. Left barrel: proved at 24, measuring .581+, minimum wall thickness 27. The makers have kindly confirmed that these guns were started on 12 February 1936 and finished on 23 August of the same year. The records note that these were model DH 70 best guns with Anson & Deeley type actions and were sold through their London gun room.

ConditionVery fine as period refurbished with 95% of the blue finish, areas of gray patina and light handling marks overall. Strong case colors are present on the frame with some fading along the edges. The stock is very good with some light dings and pressure dents along with very fine grain and color. The case is fine with some wear and tear on the canvas and mild handling marks overall. The engraving is sharp and well detailed.

B) Engraved Greener Box Lock 24 Gauge Shotgun

As A with a gold number "2" on the appropriate areas and a weight of 5 pounds, 0.8 ounces. Right barrel: proved at 24, measuring .581, minimum wall thickness 28. Left barrel: proved at 24, measuring .581, minimum wall thickness 23.

ConditionVery good as professionally refinished with 98% of the current blue, a few hints of gray patina and scattered light handling marks. The frame shows bright original color in the protected areas with a smooth silver/gray patina overall. The stock is very good with some mild dents and scuffs. Mechanically very good.
