Factory Engraved J. Purdey & Sons Push Forward Underlever Bar-In-Wood Side Lock Double Barrel Shotgun

Single bead sight on the smooth concave rib with 2 1/1 inch chambers, bored approximately 1/4 and full choke, single extractor, and modified/full chokes. Sleeved nitro barrels with the left barrel marked "Westley Richards/SLEEVED" on the chamber and standard English commercial proofs on the flats. English view and nitro proofs on the water table with a bar-in-wood action, fine Purdey bouquet and scroll engraving throughout, cocking indicators, dual triggers and tang mounted automatic thumb safety. Matching numbered Deeley patent push button checkered forearm and straight grip buttstock with a silver initial oval inscribed "F R JOHNSON", and a thick checkered hard rubber butt (1 inch extension). The makers have kindly confirmed that this gun was completed on 11 March 1880 for Sir H. Clavering of Axwell Park, Bladon-on-Tyne. The records note it was to have 30 inch damascus barrels, a Daw patent underlever and “Clutch” action. The “Clutch” action appears to be a design where the lever cocks the tumblers and precedes the first Beesley patent. The makers have also confirmed that this is the twelfth gun noted as having a “Clutch” action and was the thirty-sixth hammerless gun of any pattern produced or sold by Purdey. The barrel and stock measurements are: right barrel proved at .729, measuring .730, minimum wall thickness .033; left barrel proved at .729, measuring .730, minimum wall thickness .032; drop at comb 1 3/8 inches; drop at heel 1 3/8 inches; length of pull 14 inches. Weight: 6 lbs 12.4 oz.

ConditionFine as refinished. 97% of the blue finish remains on the barrels with mostly light handling marks, traces of spotting, and a visible line where the barrels were sleeved. The receiver and side plates have an overall gray patina with scattered dings, traces of light pitting, and evidence of cleaning. The wood is also fine with well defined re-cut checkering, small dings throughout, and some chips visible along some of the lock and tang edges. Mechanically sound.
