Description:

Shipped in December 1948, this is one of only about 142 .357 Magnum Transitional post-war revolvers in all barrel lengths manufactured by S&W from late 1946 to 1949. This example has a 3 1/2 inch barrel, the rarest and most seldom seen variation. These revolvers were similar in appearance to their pre-war counterparts but with a new micrometer rear sight and a "S" prefix serial number, and a vast majority were ordered by police departments. It has standard S&W markings, importer marking on the butt, Magna grips, right grip panel numbered "7583" and matching serial numbers on the butt, cylinder and barrel. Provenance: Frank Staig collection.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The revolver retains 70% original blue finish with the balance a smooth gray patina. There are a few patches of minor pitting on the cylinder and a number of minor scratches. The undersized replacement grips are fine with a few minor-moderate pressure dents and crisp checkering overall. Mechanically excellent. This is an incredibly rare post-war .357 Magnum Transitional. Most collectors will never even see one of these models in a lifetime.
