Desirable Documented Korean War Era U.S. Springfield M1C Garand Sniper Rifle with Scarce U.S.M.C. MC-1 Kollmorgen Scope

This is a highly desirable example of a late WWII M1-C, Garand sniper rifle that was manufactured by Springfield Armory, circa January 1945 that has been fitted with the Korean war era Griffin & Howe MC1 Sniper scope as used by the USMC. This rifle includes a copy of the CMP documentation indicating it was purchased in 2013 and was shipped to Bruce Canfield. It is estimated that during WWII Springfield manufactured over 7,500 M1C sniper rifles between the end of 1944 and December 1945. Most of the WWII production M1C rifles were eventually overhauled or rebuilt for or during the Korean War. Following the Korean War the Marine Corps adopted the 4X Stith Kollmorgen MC-1 telescopic sight with a larger Griffin & Howe mount and one-inch rings for use on the M1C sniper rifles. The Marines designated these rifles as the "1952 Sniper Rifle" and issued them in limited numbers from c.1954-1967. Small numbers on 1952 Sniper Rifles were used during the first years of the Vietnam War. Nearly all of the verified USMC 1952 Sniper Rifles are Springfield Armory Korean War rebuilds like this rifle. This rifle has the first contract MC-1 telescopic sight with high polish blue/black tube marked "MC 359-P" on the top, and the eye-piece roll-stamped with the "4X DOUBLE STITH-KOLLMORGAN Optical Company" factory commercial markings in two lines. The two-piece parkerized rings have allen head screws and are correctly stamped "T4" on the back side. This is the second pattern MC-1 mount, which is parkerized and has round end locking levers. The top of the base is roll stamped "GRIFFIN & HOWE INC. NEW YORK/PAT. #1.856,549 MAY 3, 1932". The scope has large windage and elevation knobs that produce an audible click when turned and a fine cross-hair reticle. The scarce original "Storm Queen" rubber lens are included. The rifle itself has the standard Springfield Armory receiver markings over serial number "3487296". The left side is fitted with the original WWII G&H scope base (bracket) correctly numbered on the underside; "3487296" (matching), that has the distinctive flat top "3" utilized by Griffin & Howe in 1945. It is held on with three screws and two taper pins. The rifle retains a mix of late WWII and early post war SA marked parts. The barrel stamped "S A 3-51" with the breech still in the white. It has the late war wide base gas cylinder the round top lock with the four slot, "T" marked gas cylinder plug. It has the standard front and rear sight set. It is fitted with a very nice original walnut stock and handguard set. The stock has a single boxed "SA/R" cartouche on the left rear side with a single circle "P" proof in the pistol grip area. The front handguard/barrel band have been unitized to improve accuracy. The rifle does not come with a cheek pad as the USMC did not utilize them on this model. This rifle also comes with a WWII green web sling and a milled M2 Flash Hider manufactured by the Hart Company. As noted this rifle is from the personal collection of Bruce Canfield and it is shown in his book "The M1 Garand Rifle" page 525, and in the American Rifleman -Sept 2014- "The M1C Sniper Rifle". Provenance: Bruce Canfield collection.

ConditionVery fine with 95% of the Korean War Era arsenal refurbished green-gray parkerized finish. The rifle shows limited wear just form handling and cycling., The scope base and mount are also in excellent condition. The stock and handguard are also very fine with a nice matching color, minor light handling marks on the sides and clear sharp cartouches. The MC-1 scope retains 90% plus of the original blue-black finish showing minor light handling marks and scratches overall from use and handling, with clear optics. A very nice and very scarce Korean war era M1C sniper rifle with the highly desirable USMC MC-1 Kollmorgan scope.
