Description:

This is a highly desirable example of a late WWII M1C Garand sniper rifle that was manufactured by Springfield Armory, circa January 1945. This rifle includes a letter of verification from David McClain indicating that it is an authentic M1C sniper rifle receiver. It is estimated that during WWII Springfield manufactured over 5,000 M1C rifles between the end of 1944 and December 1945, with most of the WWII production M1C rifles eventually overhauled or rebuilt for or during the Korean War. The receiver has the standard Springfield Armory markings over serial number "3592020". It is fitted with an M1C scope base on the left side, held in place with three screws and two taper pins. The bracket is numbered matching, "3592020" on the underside. It has the distinctive number "3" utilized by Springfield Armory when the bases were numbered in 1945. The base is fitted with an original G&H scope mount that is stamped with the Griffin & Howe name and patent markings on top and is numbered "3664027" (non-matching) on the side. The mount is fitted with an original Lyman 2.5X M81 Telescopic Sight with standard cross-hair reticle, sliding sun-shade and rubber eyepiece. The scope is marked on the left side: "TELESCOPE M81/SERIAL NO. 33196/STOCK NO. 84373". The elevation and windage bases are numbered "7634671" and the windage and elevation caps are unnumbered. The rifle retains its mostly original configuration of late WWII SA marked parts to include a 19-SA bolt, a uncut op rod marked with DD35382-9 SA, a correct late war rigger group. The barrel stamped "3 S A 1-45" with the breech still in the white. It has the late war wide base gas cylinder, the round top lock with the four slot, "P O" marked gas cylinder plug. It has the standard front sight and the locking bar rear sight set. It is fitted with a very nice original, walnut stock and handguard set. The stock has the late war boxed "SA./NFR" cartouche followed by the cross-cannon ordnance final inspection with a single circle "P" proof in the pistol grip area. The rifle comes with a late war brown leather lace on cheek-pad that was manufactured by the "K-Line" company and is marked on top. This rifle also comes with a WWII "Boyt/44" stamped leather sling and a milled SA/M2 marked flash hider. This rifle is from the personal collection of Bruce Canfield and it is shown in his book "The M1 Garand Rifle" on pages 422-430 and on page 525,526. This series of rifle is also discussed in "The MC1 Sniper Rifle", The American Rifleman, Sept 2014. Provenance: Bruce Canfield collection.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 98% of its green arsenal refurbished parkerized finish overall. The various parts and components all retain gray/green parkerized finish, however, the underside of the receiver shows some various areas of light pitting with parkerizing in the pitting, which may indicate the receiver has been refinished. The stock and handguard set are all in fine condition with a nice medium brown color overall with a clear sharp cartouche showing only minimal handling marks. The scope mount has 95% of a dark parkerized type finish and the M81 scope retains 98% of its original blued finish. The scope has clear sharp optics with the cross hair intact. Another fine example of a rare M1C sniper rifle from the Bruce Canfield collection.
