Description:

Manufactured in 1911, this is an exceptional example of an original pre-WWI Springfield Armory Model 1903 Springfield bolt action NRA sale rifle. These NRA sales rifles were sold by the D.C.M. only to N.R.A. members in the 1913-1916 time frame. They were issued by both Springfield Armory and Rock Island Arsenal. Although not marked with the traditional "star" stamp, the barrels were air-gauged for bore quality to ensure they were the best available barrel for the target shooters. They are identified by the "N.R.A./Ordnance Shell and Flame" stamped on the forward section of the trigger guard to denote that they were sold through the D.C.M. to an N.R.A. member; earlier, unmarked 1903s entering the secondary market had resulted in false alarms about possible theft of government property. Has the standard sights on a "S A/flaming bomb/8-11" marked barrel with a stamped metal cover, and the receiver has the standard markings. The bolt has the steel lot code "J1" stamped on the bottom of the safety lug. Mounted on a smooth walnut straight grip stock with grasping grooves, one reinforcing bolt, "B/U" in the magazine selector cutout, a boxed "J.F.C." cartouche on the left wrist, a circled script "P" proof on the underside of the wrist and a sharply checkered steel buttplate with trapdoor. Included with the rifle is a 1911 dated Springfield bayonet, 20 1/2 inches overall with a blued 16 inch blade, wood grip scales, and a side-stitched leather covered sheath marked "R.I.A./1911./H.E.K." on the rear.

Rating Definition:

Excellent plus, with 98% of the bright original blue finish, showing some light handling marks and a few hints of brown patina overall. The stock is also in excellent plus condition, with a few scattered light storage dings, and the arsenal refurbished bayonet shows some light chips on the scales and mild scuffing on the sheath. Mechanically excellent.
