Description:

This is a scarce example of a 1913 manufactured and dated Rock Island Model 1903 rifle. Manufactured in much lower numbers than the Springfield 1903, Rock Island production halted in late 1913/early 1914. Fewer are seen with the N.R.A. marking, which traditionally indicates that they were subjected to careful inspection, including air gauging of the barrel to ensure accuracy before being sold to a member of the National Rifle Association. The receiver has the standard four-line markings, and the barrel is stamped "R.I.A./flaming bomb/5-13" on top with the barrel steel code of "C93/P" on the underside. It has the standard blade front sight and the early musket rear sight with dished windage and elevation knobs and a polished face that is graduated from 100-2,700 yards and has a 2,850 yard volley notch. The straight handled bolt is stamped "C13" on the front of the safety lug. The trigger guard is stamped with a flaming bomb over "N.R.A." It is fitted with straight walnut grip stock with "S" stamped on the tip, one reinforcing bolt, a boxed "C.N./1913" cartouche on the left side, a script "P" proof on the underside behind the trigger guard, brown leather sling, sharply checkered steel buttplate and a hardwood spare parts carrier with a cocking knob, extractor claw and firing pin. Provenance: Bruce Canfield collection.

Rating Definition:

Fine, with 70% of the original blue finish, showing some flaking on the barrel bands and receiver, areas of brown patina, bright edge wear and scattered spotting and handling marks overall. The stock is also fine, with sharp cartouche, some scattered dents and scuffs. Mechanically excellent.
