Master engraver Lynton Stuart Munro McKenzie signed this set four times: "LMcK" on the front strap of the derringer at the toe, "LSMMcK" at the toe of the back straps of each revolver, and "LMcK" on the spine of the Bowie knife. Bill Quimby ranked McKenzie among the top two engravers in the world alongside Winston Churchill, "the only American engraver of his class." Included with this "Centennial Set" is an invoice on New Orleans Arms Co., Inc. letterhead dated October 21, 1975, identifying it as a "cased exhibition double Colt single-action set with Bowie knife and No. 3 Colt derringer" and noting that it was illustrated in their engraving booklet which is included. The letter is signed by McKenzie. The "lavish Colt set" is the first example pictured in the booklet and is listed as "our first major American project." The accessories and knife were likely hand crafted by D.E. Henry. The writer is cautious and does not believe he has adequate words to describe the beauty and intricacy of Mr. McKenzie's work. The set is an utter masterpiece. Pictures will do far better than words!
