Exceptional Factory Cased Colt Model 1860 Army Richards Transition Conversion Revolver from the William Locke Collection

This is an example of a Colt 1860 Richards transition conversion revolver. These short lived revolvers fall into the 190,000-199,000 serial number range and feature the hammer and shorter conversion ring without a rear sight of the Richards-Mason model. For more information see McDowells' "A Study of Colt Conversions and Other Percussion Revolvers." This excellent example was formerly from the famed William Locke and Joseph Murphy collections and is identified in the books "The William M. Locke Collection" on page 142 and "Fine Colts: The Dr. Joseph A. Murphy Collection" on page 99. The top of the barrel has the one-line New York address. The left side of the frame has the two-line, two-patent dates marking stamped over the original "COLTS/PATENT" marking as is sometimes found on Richards transition revolvers. The cylinder has the roll-engraved Texas Navy battle scene and is marked "COLT'S PATENT No. 3960." "44 CAL." is stamped on the left trigger guard shoulder. The barrel lug is a smaller lug, much different in appearance to the standard 1860 Army lug, and the slot has been filled. The hammer has a notch rear sight and a centerfire firing pin. The ejector head has the correct cross-hatch pattern. Matching numbers are found on the barrel, frame, trigger guard, back strap, cylinder (3960) and loading gate (3960). Instead of an assembly number, the loading gate was numbered on Richards transition revolvers. The revolver is primarily plated in nickel and has a casehardened hammer, nitre blued trigger, screws, barrel wedge and ejector rod head and silver-plated brass trigger guard. The partitioned case has a cartridge block, primer tin with primers, glass oiler, and bore rod.

ConditionExcellent. The barrel, cylinder, and frame retain 98% original nickel plating overall. Nearly all of the cylinder scene remains. Most of the original nitre blue remains. The trigger guard retains 30% of original silver plating in and around the protected areas. The relined case is extremely fine showing some minor handling/storage marks and some high spot wear on the lining. A documented high conditioned cased Colt Model 1860 Army Richards transition conversion revolver from the William Locke and Joseph Murphy collections that would be hard to improve upon. A great addition to any antique Colt collection!
