Historic Sword Inscribed to James Morris Morgan, Confederate Navy Veteran, Commerce Raider, and Author of "Recollections of a Rebel Reefer"

Measuring 29 inches overall, this sword is fitted with an unmarked 23 3/4 inch single fuller blade, as well as a small thumb-operated retention latch which runs alongside the left ricasso. The brass hilt is stamped "10" on the rear quillion, with a 2-branch knuckle guard, oval shaped pommel, wood grip, and a two part inscription on the back; "(fouled anchor) C S N" and "JAMES MORRIS/MORGAN". While not documented, research shows a James Morris Morgan as a member of the Confederate States Navy. Born in 1845 in New Orleans, Louisiana, Morgan was a cadet at Annapolis when the Civil War broke out, and like many young academy cadets chose to back his home state, dropping out and joining the CSA as a Midshipman, performing river service as well as sailing on the commerce raider CSS Georgia. Later in the war he would be among the party that escorted Jefferson Davis' wife out of Richmond. Following the war he accepted a commission in the Egyptian military, earning the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, owned a plantation, participated in the construction of the Statue of Liberty, and was made Consul-General to Australia. He would later recount his adventures in his autobiography, "Recollections of a Rebel Reefer", published 1917.

ConditionFair. The blade shows pitting and wear appropriate to age, with a small amount of play in the fittings. The guard branches show some dents and bends, with a mixed aged patina on the brass. The scabbard is absent.
