Sharps New Model 1863 Cartridge Conversion Saddle Ring Carbine

This carbine was manufactured in 1863-1865 as a percussion carbine for use in the Civil War and was one of 31,098 carbines returned to Sharps for alteration and refurbishment for use with the then-new .50-70 cartridge in the late 1860s. It is one of around 27,000 that have relined, 3-groove barrels. The stock was replaced. Note the cut-out on the buttplate for a patch box and has "JR" carved in the left side. The carbine has the standard markings and features.

ConditionVery good with traces of bright case colors on the hammer, hints of arsenal blue finish, faint original case colors on the action and lock, and a mix of brown and gray patina on the balance. The wood is fair with moderate handling wear, general scrapes and dings, and traces of the "DFC" cartouche. Mechanically excellent.
