Description:

This is an example of a U.S. Springfield Model 1879 Carbine with star-suffix serial number. It has been concluded that the star-suffixed carbines were refurbished and reissued carbines with replacement receivers that were refurbished by Springfield Armory. The lock plate has the eagle/shield motif with "U.S./SPRINGFIELD", and the breechblock is marked "U.S./MODEL/1873." Hammer with three notch tumbler, "C" marked rear sight graduated to 1,500 yards with base graduated "1-8" and "V/P/Eagle Head/P" proof and inspection marks on left side of barrel. Stock with saddle bar with ring, "US" marked buttplate tang, "SWP/1882" script wrist cartouche and circled "P" on the underside of the wrist. The left side of the stock is marked "S.P.F.C 25" at the heel.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The barrel has 80% arsenal refurbished blue with the balance a smooth brown patina. The barrel band retains half of the original blue finish, with a mottled bright appearance on the balance. The lock plate, hammer, and trigger guard retain 75% faded original blue finish. The breechblock and receiver retain bright original case colors. The stock is fine with a sharp cartouche, 1 inch hairline crack near the lock, small dings overall, and some small chips around the buttplate. Mechanically excellent.
