Engraved and Silver Inlaid All-Metal Scottish Highland Flintlock Belt Pistol by Alexander Campbell with Dirk

This all metal flintlock pistol is by Alexander Campbell of Doune, Scotland, in 1745-1767. The lock plate has a simple border engraving and is signed "Alexr Campbell." The metal stock features near full coverage scroll and Celtic strapwork accented with silver inlay throughout. The engraved scrollwork extends to the hammer and barrel. The barrel has a cannon type octagon muzzle section that is engraved. The button trigger has a spherical head featuring a floral blossom engraving, and the top of the trigger is visible on the back strap. Like the trigger, the pick has a spherical head but lacks an engraving. The stock has a ram's horn butt, perhaps the most distinguished characteristic of a 18th century Scottish pistol. An engraved belt hook that has ornate pierced mounting hardware is on the left side of the stock. The sides of the grip have silver oval plaques. The plaque on the right side is blank while the plaque on the left side bears an engraving of a severed boar's head over torse and the initials "JB." Since antiquity the severed boar's head has been a common emblem in heraldry. A boar's head adorns several famed Scottish clan crests and/or coat of arms. These clans include Campbell, Innes, Chisholm, Swinton, Gordon, Nesbitt and Urquhart. Comes with a Scottish dirk. The more recent dirk has a 13 3/4 inch long blade featuring a relief carved basket weaved type handle with studs, thick spine, Celtic strapwork engraved on the silver plated fittings and large cut Cairngorm crystal cap with foil backing on the pommel. The leather sheath houses a fork and knife-each with matching relief carved basket weave handles-and engraved Celtic strapwork on the silver fittings.

ConditionFine. The pistol has a bright appearance overall with a few areas of bright original blue finish, most striking behind the belt hook. The engraving is crisp, and nearly all of the silver remains. Mechanically excellent. The dirk is very good showing an area scratches on the right side of the blade. The sheath retains most of the stitching.
