Description:

This pistol has primarily brass components including the lock plate which is marked "JACOD CIVET/A ST ETIENNE." The muzzle of the multi-stage barrel flares out to 1 3/4 inches on the outside for easier reloading. The smaller components of the lock, the upper tang, the trigger, and the trigger plate are iron. The butt cap is silver and is engraved with an eagle head. Silver wire scrollwork is inlaid around the upper tang. No information on Civet was found. Blunderbuss pistols are often associated with military officers, especially those in the navy, but they were also used by mounted units, sailors, pirates, privateers, and civilians.

Rating Definition:

Very good overall with aged patina on the brass and silver, some verdigris at the vent and muzzle, mottled dark brown patina and some oxidation on the iron, a crack in the rear tang of the trigger guard, and general marks and scratches. The stock has some subtle repairs, minor chipping, a few slight hairline cracks, and some slivers of absent wire inlay. Mechanically fine.
