Description:

The muzzle is 2 inches tall and 3 inches wide. The main bore is around 9 or 10 gauge. The wide muzzle both facilitates in easier loading, does not obstruct the sight plane like a traditional belled muzzle, and was meant to concentrate the shot column horizontally. Oval muzzles like this were used at least as early as the 1750s in France where these pieces were likely manufactured, and were also used on the "Burgoyne" 1781 Pattern blunderbusses meant for the British 23rd Light Dragoons. The top of the barrel at the muzzle is engraved with a cloud over a starburst. The banded transition point to octagon has additional engraving. Near the breech is a "crown/IO/HAN/KLAS" maker's mark (Johan Klas) with gold inlay and another horse and star mark with gold inlay. The upper tang, side plate, trigger guard, and buttplate are also engraved. The lock is unmarked. The stock has a cheek pad on the comb and sling swivels. Provenance: Gillespie collection.

Rating Definition:

Fine with mottled gray and brown patina and some light pitting on the iron, aged patina on the brass, crisp engraving, and general minor wear. The cock is a replacement, and the rear lock screw head is half chipped. The cheek pad has some flaking and crackling. The stock is very good and has smooth oiled finish, a slight hairline crack at the nose of the lock, and only a few minor dings and scrapes. Mechanically fine.
