Description:

Located in a heavily wooded area (today part of a major nature park) southwest of Stuttgart in Baden-Wurttemberg, the Schonbuch forest was one of Kaiser Wilhelm II's favored hunting grounds, as well as home to a frugally built but still very cozy Royal lodge, the "Koenigliche Jagdhuette", which remains in operation to this day. Like other hunting trips by the Kaiser, government business would continue while in the forest, with affairs of state discussed around the fire after the day's shooting was done. Wilhelm was known to retain a number of trophies taken by himself and his fellows. Featuring a twenty-seven point rack with a 37" span, this skullcap is cut and mounted in the European style, with "SCHONBUCH" written across the top in black ink and a brass plaque between the antlers dated 1889 and bearing a "MFA" cipher. The cap is mounted to a finely carved hardwood plaque, with a roaring lion head at the top, gryphon supporters on the sides, and the crest of Kaiser Wilhelm II at the bottom. These trophies have survived traversing the Atlantic, two world wars, and the ravages of time and have been curated over a period of 40 years through descendants of Kaiser Wilhelm II, private collectors, auctions and individuals in Europe.

Rating Definition:

The antlers don't rest fully flush with the skull when mounted, otherwise very good overall.
