Fine European Half Skull Fallow Deer Mount Taken on a Eulenburg Hunt in 1892

Operated out of Liebenberg Castle in Brandenberg and named for the family that resided in the castle, the Eulenburg hunts were a cornerstone of the political season through the late 1800s. Taking up weeks of time during Kaiser Wilhelm II's winter travels, the attendees of the hunts included some of the most important men in Imperial Germany, as well as the Emperor's closest advisors and friends. Kaiser Wilhelm II was the last German Emperor and King of Prussia, ruling both from 1888 until his abdication in 1918. He was the eldest grandson of the British Queen Victoria, and was related to many of the monarchs and princes in Europe. The mount consists of the top half of a fallow deer skull bearing a 17-point rack with a 27 inch span, marked in black ink -"1892" across the top and "Eulenburg" down the sinus, with a "wappen" pickelhaub helmet shield from Baden installed between the antlers and accented with a red Maltese cross with a gold "FIDELITAS" badge. Though not positively identified, the colors and motto of the badge are all associated with Karlsruhe, capital city of Baden; among other distinctions, Karlsruhe was according to legend founded by Charles III William following a visionary dream on a hunting trip, and was sketched by then-Envoy Thomas Jefferson as a reference for the layout of Washington, D.C.. Hanging from the skull is a parade gorget bearing a Prussian "FR" marked eagle, and the wall plaque is carved hardwood with raised pine motifs and decorative scroll accents. These trophies have survived traversing the Atlantic, two world wars, and the ravages of time and have been curated over a period of 40 years through descendants of Kaiser Wilhelm II, private collectors, auctions and individuals in Europe.

ConditionVery good, with some light handling marks overall.
