Very Rare Engraved Greis Percussion Zimmerstutzen Gallery Rifle

Manufactured circa 1875. Barrel with 5 ¾ inch rifled insert at the muzzle and an aperture cut in the underside to allow access to the percussion pillar for priming. The remainder of the barrel contains the striker which is linked to the hammer, drift adjustable blade front sight, and standing blued rear sight engraved with the monogram "L" and struck with two dots. Border and scroll engraved tang and island lock, lock signed "GREIS IN MÜNCHEN," 12 inch walnut half-stock with raised cheekpiece and checkered panels at the grip and forend, folding aperture sight mounted behind the barrel tang, double set triggers, wooden pistol grip trigger guard with engraved steel finial, border and scroll engraved solid side plate, and large screw at the heel of the contrasting finished naked butt. Provenance: Property of a German Prince, great, great grandchild of Emperor Franz Josef I, Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary.

ConditionVery fine. The barrel 90% faded plum colored finish (probably original). The rear sight has traces of original blued finish with the remainder a dark grey color. The remaining mounts have a light grey patina and clear engraving. The stock’s original finish is rubbed from handling, especially on the forend and trigger guard, and the butt has some edge wear. The triggers set.
