Description:

The Eulenburg Collection comes from the Hohenzollern Royal Family where they originated from the Eulenburg family estate of Liebenberg Castle in Brandenberg, Germany. The Liebenberg circle can be traced to some of Kaiser Wilhelm II’s closest military and cultural advisors and was named after the castle where they frequently met and hunted. This collection is a unique record of the role of hunting in political affairs with German society. The grounds in which these hunts took place were situated on one of the Kaiser’s favorite hunting preserves. Cleaned and mounted in the European style, this skullcap bears a twenty-one point rack (10 right, 11 left) with a span of 46 inches, and is adorned with a Prussian Uhlan (Polish-style light cavalry) "wappen" style plate between the antlers. The carved hardwood base measures 22 inches tall by 19 inches wide, is painted dark with gold accents, and bears three dimensionally carved pine themed decoration as well as scrollwork along the borders. These trophies have survived traversing the Atlantic, two world wars, and the ravages of time and have been curated over a period of 40 years through descendants of Kaiser Wilhelm II, private collectors, auctions and individuals in Europe.

Rating Definition:

Very good overall, with some light wear and handling marks overall. The left antler shows a small void partway up its length, possibly evidence of a now-absent 12th point, and the antlers do not mount completely flush to the cap, leaving a gap that can be seen on close inspection. A very attractive example of a European field trophy, featuring a notably large rack and associated with prominent European nobility.
