Somewhat similar crossbows are depicted and discussed on pages 206-218 of the included copy of "The Crossbow" by Payne-Gallwey in discussions of Belgian target crossbows. It has animal motifs on the fittings securing the iron bow and on the rear peep sight. 4 foot and 3/4 inch long. Comes with a Shore Galleries Inc. of Chicago, IL tag indicating that this is 17th century Belgian crossbow.
