Indian Pata Sword

Also known as a dandpatta or gauntlet sword, the pata shows parallels to the katar dagger, using a blade projecting forward parallel to the forearm and a grip held in the fist, though the pata takes it to a higher level; it uses a full-length sword blade and integrates a solid half gauntlet that protects the forearm and locks the wrist. Though losing versatility in point work, this arrangement allows for powerful slashing attacks, effectively serving as a wrist brace while also acting as a weapon and a defensive tool. In combat it would be used both by, and against cavalry troops, with European observers noting some users fighting with one on each arm. Overall length is 47 1/2 inches, with a 36 inch double edged straight blade riveted to a pair of 6 inch long support arms. Both the arms and the gauntlet are decorated with engraved floral and dot patterns, with a set of raised floral bolsters on the ends of the 3 1/2 inch wide grip bar, multiple layers of cloth padding on the interior, a swiveling arm support bar at the rear, and raised defensive ribs at the wrist and cuff. No maker's marks are present.

ConditionGood. The metal shows an even-aged brown patina overall, along with some shallow pitting and mild handling marks. A few small gaps are visible on top of the fist area of the gauntlet, along with some superficial chipping along the left side. The number "99272" has been added to the front of the gauntlet in black marker, concealed by the blade when viewed from the top. The lining is fair with some extensive fraying and staining.
