Cased Factory Engraved and Gold Inlaid Colt 22 LR Conversion Unit, Decorated and Signed by Colt Master Engraver George Spring for Colt Industries Chairman George A. Strichman

Fitted with a set of Patridge and adjustable notch target sights and a Service Ace-style floating chamber barrel, the slide is finished in a fine high polish blue on the sides and a smooth matte finish on the sight rib and the underside. The standard markings are supplemented with fine punch-backed scrollwork on over 50% of the surface, "G*A*S-1" gold inlaid on the left side behind the serrations, and "GEORGE A. STRICHMAN/CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD/COLT INDUSTRIES" on the right side near the front sight, with the latter marking mirroring a gold embossing on the lid of the French cut black leather case. The underside of the slide is signed "GEO. SPRING COLT ENGR.", and a small brass tag marked "G.A.S./138" is included as well. George Strichman was Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Fairbanks Whitney Company starting in 1962 and was responsible for the decision to rename the whole operation Colt Industries after Colt's Manufacturing Company, which they then owned. Strichman held the position until his retirement in 1984, and his tenure represented something of a golden age for post-WWII Colt, with the firm riding high as the main supplier of the M16 rifle to the U.S. government; after his departure, Colt suffered through a prolonged UAW strike, lost the M16 contract to Fabrique Nationale, and suffered the prestige loss of the 1911A1 pistol being retired in favor of Beretta's M9. A firearms collector himself, a number of Strichman's pieces are currently housed in the Autry Museum of the American West. George Spring III, a second generation firearms engraver, came on board with Colt as an in-house engraver in 1975.

ConditionNear new, with a few minor handling marks overall. A few light stains are present on the case.
