Description:

Unmarked save for a repeating number "3" on several components. The profile of the slide is clearly an early production Sauer pocket pistol. The frame has an austere, rough appearance, having been milled and hand-filed out of a single block of solid steel and then drilled and cut to accommodate the pins to hold the trigger and internal components in place. The magazine, which is also numbered "3", is similar in appearance to the frame with no viewing holes and a thick pinned steel baseplate. As mentioned, the slide is distinctly Sauer but is not a precise match for any production model. It lacks the vertical serrations on the side of the checkered cocking knob, and the underside runs flush with the frame all the way out to the front instead of the more typical milling patterns. Comparing the slide to the rest of the firearm, it shows greater care and attention, implying that the purpose of this pistol was to test slide configurations, but as this pistol lacks documentation, any number of scenarios are within the realm of possibility; it could have been an early prototype or a test-bed for mid-production changes.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with mild spotting and handling marks on the bright, original, unfinished steel. A crack is forming on the left side of the frame directly beneath and parallel to the slide. It was never fitted with grips as the grip holes are drilled but untapped. Mechanically fine but please note that as a prototype weapon with visible metal fatigue, this pistol should not be loaded with live ammunition under any circumstances. A unique and interesting item, this prototype semi-automatic pistol could serve as a main attraction in a collection of European semi-automatics or as the focus of a research project.
