World War II U.S. Inspected Auto-Ordnance M1A1 Fully Automatic Class III/NFA C&R Submachine Gun with Magazine

This is a very fine example of a World War II production M1A1 Thompson Submachine Gun manufactured by the Auto Ordnance Corp. in Bridgeport, Connecticut. The M1A1 was introduced in April 1942 as a war-expedient/simplified version of the M1928 Thompson Submachine Gun. Per information provided by the consignor, this M1 was released from U.S. Army stores to the Anchorage Police Department of Anchorage, Alaska circa 1957, and sat unregistered in their inventory until the 1968 Amnesty. The amnesty paperwork (copy included) cites a serial number of "432864" as being "on barrel" (actually the receiver number) and "665086 on trigger guard"; when the ATF made up the tax stamp paperwork, they used the trigger guard number as the serial number, technically making that the registered component. The war expedient features included the elimination of the barrel cooling fins, Cutt's compensator, adjustable rear sight and removable buttstock. They also employed a side-mounted cocking handle and a fixed firing pin with a slightly longer bolt which allowed the weapon to be manufactured on cheaper and easier basis. This example has the standard Lyman "L" type fixed rear sight, horizontal walnut forearm and fixed walnut buttstock. The right side is marked in two lines "AUTO ORDNANCE CORPORATION/BRIDGEPORT CONNECTICUT U.S.A.". The front left side is stamped with a very faint "U.S. Ordnance", Cross-Cannon final acceptance proof, with a "GHD" inspector stamp in the middle and the top, very rear area is also stamped "U.S. PROPERTY". The left side of the receiver is marked "THOMPSON SUBMACHINE GUN/CALIBER 45 M1A1/NO. 432864" and the underside of the trigger guard bow lower frame group is stamped "665086". The side of the trigger housing is correctly marked: "AUTO/SINGLE" and "FIRE/SAFE". This SMG comes with one 30-round stick magazine and a green canvas sling.

ConditionVery fine as refurbished with 90% plus of a slate gray parkerized finish overall with edge and high spot wear showing even finish loss overall. The blued barrel has 90% of its finish with a small "S" proof mark on the left rear side. The buttstock, forend and pistol grip are all in very good condition with the forend and pistol grip having a lighter walnut color while the buttstock shows a somewhat darker tone with all three pieces have an oil finish overall. All three show light handling marks and light pressure dents overall on the sides from use and handling. A real honest WWII Auto-Ordnance M1A1 Thompson submachine gun. NOTE: This item is restricted as a National Firearms Act (NFA), fully transferable Class 3, which is registered with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, (BATFE) that is classified as a "Curios or Relic" as defined in 27 CFR, 478.11. These weapons are still subject to the provisions of 18 U.S.C. Chapter 44 and 27 CFR part 478.
