Description:

Manufactured in 1941, this Model 94 carbine is well-documented as once belonging to exhibition shooter Adolf "Ad" Topperwein. Adolf "Ad" and Elizabeth "Plinky" Topperwein were exhibition shooters active as a team from 1904 to the 1940s and served as official exhibition shooters for Winchester. Both of them possessed tremendous skill and were record holders. In December 1907, over a ten day period, Ad shot 72,500 hand thrown 2 1/4 inch blocks using a .22 rifle and only missed 9 shots setting a world record that was not bested until 1959 by Tom Frye. This carbine features Ad Topperwin's initials "AT" engraved in large script font on the left side of the frame. The carbine is equipped with a hooded ramp front sight, a series 40 rear sight which was standard on the Models 03, 04 and 36 and a Lyman tang sight. The carbine has standard Winchester factory markings including the oval proof on top of the receiver and barrel at the breech. The forearm and straight grip stock are special order highly figured smooth walnut. The buttstock is fitted with a serrated steel shotgun type buttplate. An accompanying document (photocopy) from Winchester factory records of guns presented to salesmen and executives lists several Winchester firearms presented to Topperwein by the Winchester company on September 16, 1946. These guns were presented to Topperwein at the time of his retirement, and this carbine is clearly listed by serial number with the added handwritten notation "w/ mod. 1903 rear sight." A letter from renowned Winchester expert and author George Madis verifies the aforementioned presentation document, which had been in Madis' possession for over 40 years at the time the letter was written. Madis explains that after a company exhibition shooter retired, Winchester often gave the employee the gun(s) he/she had been using, as was the case with this carbine. The provenance of the carbine is well-documented. Renowned firearms collector S.P. "Bud" Coffey was a close friend of Ad Topperwein and Coffey's collection contained several Topperwein guns. This is confirmed by a 1982 dated letter written by Nagel Gun Shop, Inc. owner R.H. Nagel. This letter lists several Topperwein guns in Coffey's collection, including this carbine, which is listed by serial number along with a brief description. A 1983 bill of sale for this carbine as sold by S.P. Coffey to purchaser Col. Rex Applegate also confirms that Coffey once owned this gun. Comes with a Topperweins/Winchester promotional button, Topperweins shooting team brochure and "Snap Shooting" by Ad Topperwein. Provenance: Col. Rex Applegate and S.P. "Bud" Coffey collections.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The carbine retains 85% original blue finish with the balance thinning to a brown and gray. The wood is excellent showing some minor dings and scratches. The right side of the buttstock has series of small plugged holes. Mechanically excellent. A fully documented Model 94 carbine owned by one of the most famous Winchester employees that a true Winchester collector can not live without!
