Description:

This is an excellent example of a very rare early "Gas Trap" M1 receiver that was converted into a late M1D Garand sniper rifle. This serial number on the receiver is "2870" indicating that it was originally manufactured in "June 1938" as Gas Trap M1. The receiver is marked "U.S. RIFLE/CAL 30 M1/SPRINGFIELD ARMORY/2870" and the markings are clear and sharp. The receiver leg does not show any depot rebuild marks. The right side of the barrel is marked "D7312555 MD-34 S A 9-52" and the breech is still in the white. It is fitted with a late-WWII operating rod marked "D35383 9 SA", with the post war modification. The remaining parts are a mix of WWII SA and WRA marked parts. The receiver is fitted with a post-war rear sight set that is marked "DRC" on the right side, with a wide base gas cylinder and a round top gas cylinder lock. It has an excellent walnut stock and handguard with just a circled "P" proof in the pistol grip area. It is fitted with a leather cheekpiece marked "MRT-2-52". The rifle is complete with an original M84 sniper scope with a M1D scope mount. The identification plate is marked "TELESCOPE M84 SERIAL NO. 24499" and it has reproduction rubber eye protector. The rifle is complete with a Hart marked M2 Flash Hider and a MRT marked green web sling. Provenance: Bruce Canfield collection.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 95% plus of the dark gray arsenal reparkerized finish overall showing only minor finish loss on the top of the bolt where it has been hand cycled. The stock and handguard set is fine with a nice medium brown color overall showing only a couple minor handling marks/light pressure dents on the sides of the stock. The scope and mount are in excellent condition with 98% of their finishes overall. The optics are clear and sharp and the reticle is intact.
