Very Fine U.S. Winchester Model 1917 Bolt Action Rifle

These 1917 rifles were the primary service rifle used by the American expeditionary forces throughout WWI and many saw service during the early days of WWII, making original examples very scarce. The top of the receiver is marked "U.S./MODEL OF 1917/WINCHESTER/462340". The muzzle end of the barrel is correctly stamped with the "Winchester" markings "W/flaming bomb/12-18". The left receiver rail is stamped with the Ordnance bomb and "eagle/J2/J13" inspection marks. Fixed blade front sight with wing protectors and a rear peep/ladder combination sight graduated from 1-16 on the polished ladder face. The bolt handle is stamped "W" and "NS" on the underside, indicating a nickel-steel Winchester produced bolt. Mounted with a smooth matching two-piece walnut straight grip stock and handguard with grasping grooves, stacking swivel and bayonet lug on the front band, "eagle head/520" stamped on the underside of the wrist, and "eagle head/542" stamped on the bottom of the forearm. The tip of the stock is correctly marked "W". Fitted with a smooth steel buttplate with trap. Includes a leather claw style sling. Provenance: Bruce Canfield collection.

ConditionVery fine. 80% plus original factory blue finish remains with some areas of edge wear and thinning, handling marks overall, sharp markings, and some small scattered dings. The stock is also very fine with some scattered pressure dents and dings, disassembly marks on the underside of the forend, and clear markings. Mechanically excellent. Correction to the serial number listed in the description
