Description:

Manufactured c. 1848. Also referred to by collectors as the "Fluck" Dragoon or "Pre-1st Model" Dragoon revolver; at least 300 Walker Replacement Dragoon revolvers were manufactured to replace the U.S. Model 1847 Walker Colts lost or destroyed in service. This revolver has the combination of long back strap and distinctive grip profile, re-worked Walker trigger guard assembly, cylinder with pressure ridges near the cylinder stops and tiny Walker style serial numbers which identify Walker Replacement revolvers. The six shot cylinder is finished bright has the early oval cylinder stops with single safety pin. The cylinder is roll-engraved with the Ranger and Indian fight scene, "MODEL U.S.M.R./COLT'S PATENT" and "Ormsby" engraver markings. "COLTS/PATENT/U.S." is roll-stamped near the center of the left side of the frame. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped: "{ ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW YORK CITY } reading toward the muzzle. The serial number, "2832" is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard, back strap and on the side of the cylinder using the same tiny numerals utilized on Walker revolvers. The wedge is stamped with the partial serial number "832" using identical numbers. The top of the loading lever is stamped with the partial number "116". Small "P" Ordnance sub-inspection marks are stamped: on the back strap behind the hammer, bottom of the trigger guard, and (3) cylinder. "K" is stamped on the top barrel flat near the breech and "Z" is stamped on the left side of the lever. The lower right side of the grip is stamped with the script "WAT" final inspection mark in an oval. An illegible Ordnance sub-inspection mark is stamped on the lower left side of the grip. The revolver has the Colt military blue finish on the barrel with bright unfinished cylinder and color casehardened loading lever, frame and hammer. The trigger guard and back strap have an attractive natural brass finish. The one-piece grip is oil-finished American walnut. The hammer has borderless knurling on the spur. The revolver has the early v-shaped mainspring. The Colt Walker Replacement Dragoon revolvers are extremely rare and were some of the first military contract pistol manufactured at the Colt Hartford facility.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus. The revolver is all original with the exception of the loading lever. traces of the original military blue finish are visible on the bottom of the barrel below the loading lever and faint case colors are present on the frame. The balance of the metal surfaces have a crisp gray-brown patina. There are traces of light pitting on the barrel near the muzzle with slightly heavier pitting and scattered shallow dents on the sides of the barrel lug. The cylinder has scattered age spotting with some shallow pitting. The Ranger and Indian scene and cylinder markings are faint but fully visible. The frame has scattered age spotting with traces of shallow pitting. The barrel legend, patent markings, "P" sub-inspection marks and serial numbers are all sharp. The brass trigger guard and back strap are good overall . The grip is very good with light dents and scratches on the sides and some deeper scratches on the left side of the butt. Both of the Ordnance inspection marks on the sides of the grip are visible and the "WAT" mark on the right side is legible. The action is tight and fully functional. This is a solid example of an extremely rare and very difficult to obtain Colt U.S. Walker Replacement Dragoon revolver. This much sought after U.S. inspected revolver is a key piece for the advanced collector of U.S. military handguns or Colt revolvers.
