Description:

This Second Model LeMat Two-Barrel Revolver was manufactured in Paris, France c. 1864-1865. This single action percussion revolver features the distinctive nine-shot cylinder that revolves on the center axis of a five-inch smoothbore, 63 caliber, "buckshot barrel". The hammer has a pivoting striker which can be used to fire the cylinder percussion nipples or the single nipple for the shot barrel. This revolver has the reciprocating pin mechanism to rotate the cylinder. This system was used on Paris LeMat revolvers thru about serial number 2000. Other Paris Second Model features on the revolver include: (1) round trigger guard, (2) full octagon .42 caliber barrel, (3) loading lever on the left side of the barrel, (4) fixed lanyard ring on the butt, (5) Paris address on the barrel and (6) "Star/L.M" trademark. The top of the barrel is engraved: "Systme LeMat Bte s.g.d.g. Paris" with a single line border with flourishes at either end. The Paris LeMat trademark consisting of a five-pointed star above the letters "L.M." is stamped on the right side of the barrel. The serial number, "1902", is stamped: (1) on the right side of the barrel between the trademark and the breech, (2) on the side of the cylinder and (3) on the right side of the frame above the trigger guard. The letter "N" is stamped on the left side of the hammer. The revolver lacks the London proofmarks and "M" enclosed in a square cartouche (reputed to be the inspection mark of Confederate Navy Lieutenant W.H. Murdaugh) which are considered definitive indications of Confederate LeMat revolvers. Purchased in limited numbers by the Confederate government during the Civil War but carried by several prominent Confederate General Officers, the LeMat revolver is most closely associated with Confederate General J.E.B. Stuart. Stuart was the foremost cavalry general of the of the Civil War and carried First Model LeMat serial number 115 throughout the war until his death at the Battle of Yellow Tavern, Virginia, in June 1864.

Rating Definition:

Very good. This revolver is complete and fully functional with clear markings. The revolver has a dark patina with silver-gray highlights. There is light-moderate flash pitting on the barrels, frame and percussion nipples. The pivoting striker has more finish and less wear than other components and may be a replacement. The two-piece walnut grips are in good overall condition with moderate wear. All of the visible serial numbers match. The is a complete and functional example of a scarce Civil War configuration Paris Second LeMat Two-Barrel Revolver
