Description:

Manufactured by an unknown smith, this item has all the virtues of a classic Confederate combat knife. Produced by an uncountable number of makers, from professional cutlers, through assorted metalworking firms forced by need into the arms trade, to the stereotypical "backwoods blacksmiths", the Southern fighting knives generally had two things in common; the words "big" and "tough". Decoration, finish and materials varied, sometimes even with a single maker over time, but the output was consistently a big scary looking knife. This example measures in at 17 1/2 inches long, with a 12 1/4 inch long double edged spear point blade, hexagonal in cross-section and 2 1/4 inches wide across the base. A thick "S" profile guard is installed on the contoured one-piece maple grip, with a brass pommel cap. The sheath is carved multi-piece hardwood, with a leather belt loop, 5-pointed star motifs down the face, a diamond near the tip, and "TEXAS/4" stamped onto a decorative leather strap. While not documented, the markings would suggest a connection to the 4th Texas Infantry Regiment, a component of the Texas Brigade, which saw heavy action in the Eastern Theater, including at Gettysburg where they were among the attackers that attempted to dislodge the Union from Little Round Top.

Rating Definition:

Very Good. The blade shows a mixed dark patina with bright wear along the high edges, with mild spotting, some light pitting, and traces of rough filework. The guard and pommel are of similarly aged color and show a small amount of play, with a few light chips in the grip. The sheath is good, with some mild scuffs and chips.
